Longtime residents remember seeing some of the very same stumps that are now exposed, years ago.
Without fail, when these relics have appeared, mother nature has covered them back up with sand in time for the summer tourist season after allowing us a brief glimpse at the distant past.
The N’oreasters that came in rapid sucsession this month scrubbed Kennebunk beaches of a deep layer of sand, uncovering a pre-revolutionary shipwreck on Mother’s Beach, that author, teacher, and Flying Santa, Edward Rowe Snow tentatively identified in 1960 as the 1770 packet Industry of St. Snow recovered a treenail from the wreck that had a diamond-shaped wedge.
The ancient trees periodically become exposed when severe storms pull sand off the beaches temporarily.
Radiocarbon dating was used to date similar stumps at Middle Beach and in the cove just west of Lord’s Point in 1959 by Geologist Arthur M. The tests indicate that about 3,000 years ago, these trees were growing in a wooded upland.
They shared the landscape with Native Americans that populated what is now the intertidal zone.
